Greetings: Representing the Student Body
Nicole Capp
President, GW Student Association
Good morning. Washington, D.C.—it is a city of leaders, and the George Washington University certainly prides itself on preparing the leaders of our future. In such a setting, I can think of no better person than Dr. Steven Knapp to be the leader of this University.
Dr. Knapp has displayed, not only a commitment to academic excellence, but he’s more importantly, a great guy.
He listens to students—attends so many of our events, already—and takes pride in applying our perspective in decision making.
Additionally, and more impressively, Dr. Knapp and his wife actually helped out freshman with moving into their dorm on Move-In Weekend this year, an action that, in my opinion caused them both to risk life and limb. Those of you who know a freshman or work with them upon first moving in, know what I’m talking about. It is also an action that earned President Knapp and Mrs. Knapp the awestruck admiration of the student body.
Throughout this inauguration process, President Knapp has insisted that the focus be on our great University, no him. I believe this is a significant sign of the kind of Administration that Dr. Knapp will lead.
Sometimes it seems Washington, D.C. was built for those with the most self-important personalities. As President Harry Truman remarked, "Washington is a very easy city—for you to forget where you came from, and why you go there in the first place." In the months that Dr. Knapp has served as President of our University, it has become clear that he knows exactly where he came from, and knows exactly what he is here to do. There is no doubt in my mind that when I visit GW for my 10th reunion, or 20th or 30th, I will see a world-renowned institution of higher learning.
I believe this so strongly as a student, because I believe in President Knapp. He has the vision, and the ability to lead us onward and upward. On behalf of the student body at the George Washington University, it is my very great honor to welcome him here today. Thank you.
